Summer Conference Schedule

The schedule for this coming weekend’s Texas Songwriters Summer Conference 2015 (July 17-19) at The Mockingbird Cafe has been updated and is available for your review.

Below is the most recent update to the schedule for the Texas Songwriters Summer Conference being held this weekend Friday, July 17 – Sunday, July 19 at The Mockingbird Cafe in Austin, Texas. Note, we have added a pre-conference event for Thursday, July 16, from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM where you can register, check in and also schedule your pitch-to-publisher and one-on-one mentor sessions.

Texas Songwriters Summer Conference Schedule

Thursday, July 16th, 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM

REGISTRATION OPENS: The Mockingbird Cafe will be open from 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM for registration to the conference. You will be able to schedule your private pitch-to-publisher appointments and your one-on-one mentoring sessions with various music industry professionals.

OPEN MIC: At 7:00 PM, we will kick off an open mic event as part of the pre-event registration. Sign up to perform on The Mockingbird Cafe stage while we mingle, meet and greet our fellow songwriter attendees for the weekend. Registration will continue through the Open Mic event, which concludes at 10:00 PM.

Friday, July 17th, 3:00 PM – MIDNIGHT

PITCH TO PUBLISHER: The Pitch To Publisher appointments will run from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Schedule your appointment when you check in at registration.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTOR SESSIONS: During the same 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM window, you will be able to schedule one-on-one mentoring sessions with Music Attorney, John Absher of Mike Tolleson & Associates and/or with music publicist Cash Edwards of Cash Edwards Music Services. You can schedule your appointments at registration check-in.

MUSIC LICENSING FOR FILM & TV: From 4:00 – 5:00 PM, Ted Lowe of Choice Tracks lends his invaluable experience in the Los Angeles music industry licensing music for film and television. Ted leads a Q&A discussion on how independent artists can increase their chances on having their music licensed for placement in television shows and feature films.

PREPARING FOR THE STUDIO: On Friday, July 17th from 5:00-6:30 PM, Producer, songwriter and recording artist Stephen Doster of Atticus Records facilitates this workshop on preparing for the studio. The secret to a successful project that comes in on time and on budget is to have a great pre-production strategy before actually spending money to go into the studio. If you are preparing for the studio, come learn from one of Austin’s most talented producers how you should plan your time and your budget, how to choose the best songs, and how to revise good songs to make them great even while in the studio. In short, simply how to make your project the best it can be.

PUBLISHERS PANEL: At 7:00 PM, Bobby Rymer of Writer’s Den Music Group will facilitate a music publishing panel with Jimmy Metts, Shelby Kennedy and Ted Lowe.

CONCERT WITH INSTRUCTORS: Following the Publishers Panel, there will be a concert with the instructors from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Lineup TBA**

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE DAY: After the concert, the Publishers will announce their song picks of the day from the pitch-to-publisher appointments. If your song is chosen, you will have the opportunity to perform the song from The Mockingbird stage.

OPEN MIC & SONG CIRCLES: After the Publishers Picks are completed, it’s all about the songs and songwriters for the rest of the evening as an Open Mic kicks things off, followed by a song circle until everyone goes home. Have fun, but pace yourself because Saturday morning comes early and we have some great early morning events lined up for Saturday morning that you won’t want to miss.

Saturday, July 18th, 9:00 AM – Midnight

PITCH TO PUBLISHER: The Pitch To Publisher appointments will run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Schedule your appointment when you check in at registration.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTOR SESSIONS: From 10:00 AM to Noon, while Pitch-to-Publisher appointments are happening, you will also be able to schedule one-on-one mentoring sessions with Robert Cross of KUT & KUTX Radio and The Cactus Cafe.

SAYING NO, TO SAY YES: On Saturday morning from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM, Rick Busby leads a “working” workshop guaranteed to energize your songwriting process. What are you tolerating in your life that gets in the way of your creative expression? What do you do when you feel creatively blocked? Do you have a strategy for overcoming creative resistance?  “Saying No, To Say Yes” will help you tune into your own internal power of renunciation in order to eliminate the resistances and tolerations that block creative expression. Rick’s strategies will help you clean up the blocks in your own creative expression thereby releasing the latent creative power they are covering up.

RADIO Q&A: From 10:45 AM until Noon on Saturday morning, Austin radio veteran and Sun Radio host Roger Allen leads this informal Q&A sharing insights and experiences gleaned from his long career in radio both “then and now.” Roger’s deep experience in radio is certain to provide you with tips and strategies on how to effectively make radio a part of your overall strategy to promote your music.

SONGWRITER’S KEYNOTE WORKSHOP WITH PHILLIP WHITE (1:30 – 3:00 PM)

STATE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Q&A WITH SHELBY KENNEDY (3:15 – 4:30 PM)

PLAYING YOUR OWN GAME:  From 4:30 – 6:00 PM, Bobby Rymer, Jimmy Metts and Shelby Kennedy lead a discussion on how independent artists can forge careers without living in one of the major music business towns like Nashville or L.A.

DINNER 6:00 – 7:30 PM

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE DAY: After the dinner break, at 7:30 PM, the Publishers will announce their song picks of the day from the pitch-to-publisher appointments. If your song is chosen, you will have the opportunity to perform the song from The Mockingbird stage.

Sunday, July 18th, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

GOSPEL PICKIN’ CIRCLE & MORNING COFFEE (9:00 AM – 10:00 AM)

ONE-ON-ONE MENTOR SESSIONS: From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, you will be able to schedule one-on-one mentoring sessions with Ted Branson of KOOP Radio. You can schedule your appointments at registration check-in.

WEEKEND WRAP UP: From 10:00 – 11:30, Lee Duffy will moderate a panel discussion with Bobby Rymer, Shelby Kennedy, Jimmy Metts and Phillip White to fill in the gaps on your weekend experience. If there is something, you were not able to get earlier in the weekend, this will be your chance to get your questions answered.

KODAK MOMENTS AND WINDING DOWN: In these informal final moments, we take pictures, trade contact info and wind down our experience together. Having made new friends and created new memories with old friends, we say our temporary goodbyes and begin making plans to be at the 2016 Symposium in January.

**Some events are still in flux because of travel schedules of the faculty so there may be slight revisions to the schedule. If so, the event will be marked with a double asterisk (**). However, all of those issues are expected to be resolved in the next 24-48 hours and this page will be updated upon their confirmation, if needed. All schedule slots will certainly be confirmed prior to the start of the conference on Friday.
