FREE Songwriting With The Masters

Join ASG President, Rick Busby for a special “Songwriting With The Masters” workshop on Sunday, October 18th at The Mockingbird Cafe. Part of October’s Membership Drive month. The workshop is FREE to everyone, member or not.

If you are a songwriter who would like to improve your craft, or if you are a student of songwriting that would like to deepen your understanding of the songwriting craft, then make a date right now to attend a mini-version of the workshop “Songwriting With The Masters: From Hank Williams to Jason Isbell” on Sunday, October 18th from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at The Mockingbird Cafe. The workshop is a mini-version of the full workshop presented in August and is FREE to everyone, member or not, as part of the October Membership Drive calendar of events.

ASG President and resident “Song Doctor,” Rick Busby will facilitate the workshop, leading songwriters in attendance through an exploration of some of the greatest songs of the last 70 years, while exploring a master’s checklist of songwriting elements. If you believe your own songwriting can benefit from a deeper understanding of the craft as practiced by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, then this workshop is for you. The workshop is open to the public and you do not have to be an active ASG member to attend. This is a rare opportunity for non-members of ASG to attend an ASG sponsored event without becoming a member first, and the price of the workshop is the same for members and non-members alike.

During the workshop, Rick will lead songwriters in attendance through an exploration of songs written by some of the masters in songwriting history, including:

  • Hank Williams
  • Burt Bachrach & Hal David
  • Gerry Goffin & Carole King
  • Bob Dylan
  • John Lennon
  • Paul McCartney
  • George Harrison
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Merle Haggard

  • Joni Mitchell
  • Randy Newman
  • Neil Young
  • Gordon Lightfoot
  • Elton John & Bernie Taupin
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Rodney Crowell
  • Ryan Adams
  • Jason Isbell

In the process of exploring songs written by these and other masters, we will look at a wide range of songwriting elements, concepts and strategies, including:

  • Analyzing Song Structures & Forms
  • Identifying Song Types: Love Songs, Protest Songs & More
  • Relationships Between Melody & Lyrics
  • Creating Effective Verses
  • Building The Chorus Around The Hook Line
  • Chorus or Refrain?
  • To Bridge or Not To Bridge?
  • Chord Structures & Modulating Song Keys
  • Writing Killer Opening Lyric Lines
  • Hard Rhyme vs. Soft Rhyme or No Rhyme Schemes
  • Metaphors, Similes & Other Lyrical Devices
  • Writing in 1st Person Confessional Point of View
  • Writing in the First Person as a Third Person Character
  • Setting the Time & Place
  • Active vs Passive Voice
  • Much More…

If you attended the first workshop, don’t think that you’ve already done it. Each presentation is unique, and the discussions will often follow insights that come up as a result of questions or comments from those in attendance. As “Songwriting With The Masters” takes its place among the regular monthly calendar of ASG events, each month;s workshop will have a different focus. The original workshop focused on a wide range of writers reaching back to Hank Williams all the way current songwriting hero, Jason Isbell.

Future workshops in the works will micro-focus on songs and songwriters from legendary record labels like Motown and Asylum, as well as genre oriented focuses like Outlaw Country, Texas Legends, Songwriting Teams and Ladies Only among others that are in the works.

So now is a perfect opportunity to check it out for FREE and then put it on your monthly calendar for workshops in November and December and throughout 2016. There is no need to pre-register for this event, just mark your calendar and show up at The Mockingbird Cafe on Sunday afternoon October 18th from 2-5 PM. We look forward to seeing you there.
